Friendly Take-Over?

January 21, 2013 in Uncategorized

Now that I’m moving out of The Woodner, I am looking for some people to become contributing writers. And quite possibly for someone to take it over. I still believe that the Woodner has the potential to become more of a community and maybe there are already pockets of people out there who are looking to connect with other residents. But no matter what, it’s the group power of the residents that will help to improve this building.

So if you’re interested please comment or write an article about something you’re concerned about and I will post it.  And if you’re interested in taking it over, let me know that as well.

Moving Out

January 21, 2013 in Uncategorized

So I will be moving out of the Woodner soon. Overall I have to say that my stay here (1 year) was pretty uneventful so I consider that to be a good thing. I can’t really complain too much about the Woodner when I consider how much the rent is. So why am I moving? I’m really looking to upgrade and find a more comfortable and upscale place. The smell of pot in the hallways, trash in the elevators etc. are things that really don’t say “welcome home” to me.  Also my new place will have a dishwasher, washer dryer in unit, a real gym, club house, business center etc.  Where is this great place? Out in VA of course. Because finding all that in the city is astronomical in pricing.

The Woodner has served as a launching pad and it definitely has taught me what I can and cannot live without.  The washer/dryer and dishwasher turned out to be pretty important to me. Also I realized that a bigger kitchen & counter space is key because I actually wanted to cook a lot more than I thought. I probably could do a studio again (bigger) but I’m moving into a 1 bedroom.

I’m curious to see how the actual move out will go. When I moved in, the leasing office mentioned the loading dock in the garage but the reality was that the loading dock was more like a parking dock. I couldn’t even get close to it.  The people in the leasing office don’t really seem to be in communication with the parking attendants. i’m personally hoping for a 1 day move. Wish me luck!

Lock Out Fee

I got locked out of my apt over the weekend and the buidling is charging me 20 bucks!  Outrageous! Has this happened to anyone else?  I emailed the Woodner’s GM, I hope to get a positive answer back.
Hi Joe,
On Saturday evening I exited my apartment and the second I shut the door I realized I left my keys inside.  The front desk charged me $20 to have someone ride up in the elevator with me and unlock the door (this maybe took a total of 4 minutes).  I’ve lived in the Woodner for almost three years and have NEVER locked myself out.  I find $20 to be a bit steep especially since this is the first time.  I can understand charging residents who are repeat offenders but don’t you make exceptions for first timers?  I spoke to a woman in the management office this morning and she said unfortunately there is nothing she can do and ”that’s just the way it is.”  “That’s just the way it is” is not an answer, exceptions can be made.  In fact, a friend that I recommended to The Woodner moved in so really The Woodner owes me $200.
Thanks for your time and please contact me anytime to discuss further.

Great Design Idea for Less than $5

August 21, 2012 in Uncategorized

I can across this great design idea on one of my favorite sites. (www.apartmenttherapy.com) Create dramatic and personal graphic print cheaply. In a nutshell, you find a picture, print or photographic that you really love and would like to have poster size. Take it to Staples and have them enlarge it and print it in black & white.  This can be done for less than $5. The picture below is an example. So instead of covering your walls with someone else’s pictures..cover them with yours!

Come Live with Me!

August 11, 2012 in Uncategorized

I noticed some flyers up around the Woodner offering a cash incentive for referrals for new residents. Which raises an interesting question, would you for $200  suggest to a friend of yours to come live here at the Woodner? Do you like it that much?  Why or why not? I know a great many people choose the Woodner because of it’s relatively low rent. I am curious as to how many residents who can afford to move..move after one year and how many stay simply because they like it?  How long have you been here? How long will you be here?

That’s right my friends.. the days of carrying those heavy bottles and cases of beer from your car or the grocery store are behind you. The Woodner Market has booze! I haven’t had a chance to get down there and check ou the selection but they are seeking suggestions.  I would highly suggest that you drop by and give them your thoughts and preferences. Just like everything else here at the Woodner, the Market is what you make it.  Let’s make sure there is something for everyone!  Maybe some enterprising person could organize a little wine tasting?!

Red Pill or Blue Pill?

Hello Woodies!

Today I will tackle one of the most important decisions you will ever have to make..who will provide your cable and internet? In the information age, this actually is a crucial choice.  Internet speed, television viewing options and cost. Those are the key ingredients in making your decision.  Who did you choose and why?  What services did you get? Have you been satisfied with your internet speeds and connectivity?

I chose RCN and I’m beginning to think it was a mistake. I have HD TV and the 50mb internet. That bundle cost $139 before the random taxes and fees. Does that sound right?

Slacker Nation

There seems to be a trend with some of our Woodner neighborhoods or should I say former neighbors. Right around the end of the month (ie moving day) there is an increase in abandoned furniture and various household items usually left near the freight elevator.  I occasionally see a book shelf or dilapidated ironing board but recently these items have grown in scale. Now it’s mattresses, bed frames and of of today  what appears to be a full sectional sofa! So obviously these residents have deemed these items not worth moving to their next location but surely they could at least carry them down to the dumpster?! Or maybe the Woodner could take care of these items for a small fee. As it turns out, the maintenance staff will have to deal with these items anyway. Perhaps these residents would be more considerate and take advantage a service like that.
